School Crossing Guard

This is a part-time position that works approximately 1 ½ hours in the morning and afternoon assisting school children in crossing major traffic throughfares in a designed school zone. Reports to the school crossing guard lead.

School Crossing Duties

Assists children at street crossing zones. Directs children to crossing zones and insures traffic is stopped in order to allow children to cross the street. Assists in maintaining a safe atmosphere for school children in and around school crossing zones. Instructs the children on safe conduct when crossing in a school zone. Records and reports vehicles driving recklessly and at high rates of speed. Visually and audibly detects hazards for safety concerns. Stands and uses both arms and hands to direct traffic for extended periods of time in various weather conditions. Visually and audibly alert to detect traffic hazards for personal and public safety.

Attendance & Performance

Required to report to work at the appointed hour, as scheduled, and to work the entire assigned shift. May at times require flexibility in work hours. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED preferred. Job requires no previous training in this area. Periodic classes are given to enhance job knowledge and skills. Must be able to read, write and follow oral and written instructions. REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

Must have the ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action. Ability to deal with others firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect. Ability to follow and understand oral and written instructions. Must have knowledge of safety rules which can be taught to young pedestrians. Must have knowledge of school procedures when dealing with uncooperative students. Ability to establish friendly relationships with youth and parents. Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations.

If applicable, supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Ability to read a limited number of words and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these mathematical skills using money and other forms of measurement.

Ability to use common sense understanding in order to carry out simple multi-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with limited variables.

Under immediate supervision, with SHORT ASSIGNMENTS of work at frequent interval with REGULAR CHECK of work. Operations requiring little attention and repeated successively at short intervals or non-repetitive, but of such a nature as to REQUIRE LITTLE DIRECTED THINKING.

Frequent contacts with general public, patrons, or other outside representatives, wherein the manner of handling these contacts has a bearing on the organization's position and operation. Contacts of little importance and usually with immediate associates only. Requires only ordinary courtesy to avoid friction in relationship incidental to working with others.
