The Phlebotomist I is responsible for performing blood draws and specimen collection while ensuring accuracy, patient comfort, and compliance with established procedures.
This role includes specimen processing, documentation, and communication with patients and internal teams to support laboratory operations and maintain specimen integrity.
Responsibilities:
Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and process specimens according to established procedures.
Collect, store, split, freeze, and package specimens as required by test orders.
Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear and courteous manner.
Demonstrate proper techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
Review and understand physician orders and laboratory requisition forms.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify accuracy of labels and test orders.
Store specimens at required temperatures and follow protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
Record maintenance data, perform decontamination, and update patient information accurately.
Comply with safety, health, and regulatory standards.
Attend required department training sessions.
Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory result information as appropriate.
Requirement/Must Have:
Valid phlebotomy certification as required by the state of employment.
Ability to perform venipunctures in a fast-paced environment.
Understanding of specimen handling, processing, and transport procedures.
Ability to follow safety and regulatory guidelines.
Experience:
Minimum experience performing venipunctures in a laboratory or hospital setting.
Experience using Microsoft Office applications.
Skills:
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
Qualification And Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
